Wow, it was irritating - I've been downloading, pausing on shutdown and resuming a large file all day, I'm in an internet cafe now and once my hour session expired all my connections got redirected to a login page on the router, pending me buying another cup of coffe and getting another access code. DTA was redirected to this 9KB login page also and decided to download that and replace the file it was working on with it. I got a nice "ping" sound and the original file was gone.

Basically it seems like a defect that DTA should be satisfied that a file with a completely different name and size is the very file it's been downloading, even if it does get redirected in such a seamless way that it appears to have the same address. This seems like a rehash of the FDM problem with force download scripts. In any case, it can't do any harm to correct this, can it? It would solve the annoyance for poor souls like me :)
